Community-Driven Coalition Calling for Federal Court Intervention and Community Oversight of the Chicago Police Department
In June 2017, a coalition of attorneys, community organizations and individuals filed a historic class action lawsuit seeking federal court oversight of the Chicago Police Department’s (“CPD’s”) operations on behalf of thousands of individuals, predominately Blacks and Latinxs, who have been subjected to the CPD’s policy and practice of using force in racially discriminatory and often brutal ways.
After reaching an unprecedented agreement with the Illinois Attorney General and Chicago Mayor, the community coalition has released the Community Consent Decree, addressing almost every aspect of CPD operations—including how the CPD interacts with Black and Brown communities, people with disabilities, young people, women and LGBTQI individuals.
The proposed decree also overhauls the accountability and disciplinary systems and describes new performance metrics for the evaluation of officers.
